Steps for enlightenment
1 - Register a .COM domain
Find a good .COM name and register it. It will only cost you around $10 a year (or less if you find a site with a promotion). I usually use Netfirms.com but you can use anyone you want. Think about what you want to do: Sell yourself as freelancer, sell a downloadable product, etc. Be creative! Check if it is available and if it is, register it soon!. In addition, you may want to get a hosting provider to host your website pages, but this is not a must. You can redirect your domain to a free website in Google Sites or Blogger.
2 - Create a GMail account
As soon as you register your domain, fly to Gmail.com and register a new account using your new domain name. Gmail.com will be your communication center.
3 - Open an AdSense account at Google
Google AdSense will allow you to get your first dollars when your visitors click the banners in your site. Every click will give you a few cents, but we are thinking big here so thousands of visitors will give you thousands of clicks. Login with your Google Gmail Account and follow the instructions. That is all for the moment. We will place your AdSense banners later.
4 - Create a PayPal account
If you want your visitors to pay for your products or downloadables, you need a virtual money account. PayPal is one of the most popular options. With more than 150 million accounts in 190 countries and regions, PayPal offers a fast, affordable and convenient online payment service for businesses of all sizes. You only need to create an account using your GMail account by now.
5 - Register as an Amazon Associate
Amazon Associates offers a lot of alternatives. It will allow you to make money advertizing Amazon products. You can create banners, links and even a virtual Amazon store, without having any product of your own! Open an account and look around. That all what we are looking for at the moment.
6 - Try to find a nice website template
We need a nice and modern website template to build something that your visitors will enjoy. If you like design and have time to do it, you can do it yourself. However, I recommend using any of the free alternatives in Open Source Web Design website. They are all free and easy to customize. Download your favorite design and be ready to modify it.
7 - Create your Homepage
Your homepage will be the most important page of your site. More than 80% of your visitors will reach it first. It will be your presentation card, your face, your business front door. This homepage will be your template for the rest of the pages in your site. Most web pages have 2 parts: the main body and the side bar. The main body must have a brief explanation of your site, your objectives and how this site will help your visitor. In the side bar, people usually put the banners, the referral programs and some important links. But before doing this, let's work a bit on our SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
8 - SEO using description and keywords meta tags
Create a new document in Google Doc using your Gmail account and write a small paragraph describing your site objectives, what the site is, what the site does for your visitor and what you can find there. After that, write a list of the 10-20 most descriptive words from your previous paragraph. Save it all and keep that close to you because this description and keyword list will help you a lot in your SEO. 9 - Add GeoURL information in meta tags
GeoURL will help you to attract more visitors. When you add your site to the directory, everyone that searches information based on a location close to your location, will display your site URL, and with some luck, more visitors!. Register your site and modify your meta tags as explained there. One tip: add a very popular address in the U.S. when prompted. After you have uploaded your website, use the ping form to let GeoURL know that your site is up and running.
10 - Add Google AdSense banners
There are a lot of alternatives here. Many recommend to put a big central banner on top. Others prefer a few on the side bar. Login in Google AdSense and select the option you find most suitable for your design and needs. Do not clutter your site with banners! That will not help you. It is better to have a few very visible that a lot that confuse the visitor. After you have what you want, copy and paste the code and add it to your main page.
